An innovative approach to the Australian bush food business

An innovative approach to the Australian bush food business

Australia's bush food industry is booming, with traditional varieties in high demand, yet there is still less than 1 per cent Indigenous representation in the supply chain.

Kargaru Nursery works with Aboriginal communities to increase Indigenous participation in the native foods industry. By establishing social and commercial enterprises in bush foods and traditional medicine crops, we help to empower Indigenous communities to tap into the unexplored market potential.

One of the greatest challenges for anyone wanting to get involved in small-scale farming is selecting the right varieties for market and growing conditions. Kargaru nursery offers many years of experience in managing the process of growing, distribution and marketing of bush foods and traditional botanicals for industry, and we continue to develop our capacity in order to support small-scale growers

The First Nation's Seed Bank is at the core of our conservation efforts, and serves as a repository for seeds, guarded in a safe environment. The importance of collecting seeds has become more urgent as biodiversity is challenged with pests, development and climate change. Local, regional and global food security depends on this diversity. The seed bank's primary function is to conserve this genetic diversity for future generations, and to ensure a vibrant selection of varieties for regional bush food operations.  Even under optimal conditions in a seed bank, seeds lose viability over time. Biodiversity information management, assessment and regenerating aging samples, occurs at the Kargaru Conservation Gardens in Tennant Creek, NT.
